Noise on a defence estate doesn’t come from one source, and most of it isn’t the range. Here’s what typically drives it:

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 explicitly does not apply to members of the Armed Forces carrying out operational activity, or to military aircraft or naval vessels carrying out operational activity, meaning NZDF’s operational noise sits outside standard WorkSafe jurisdiction in those contexts. Non-operational workplace noise, in workshops, depots, and administrative sites, generally follows the same 85 dB(A) exposure guidance WorkSafe applies elsewhere. Community-facing noise from a base is managed through NZDF’s own environmental and community engagement processes rather than a standard resource consent pathway under the RMA.
That’s a different compliance conversation to a commercial energy or industrial site, and worth having directly with your base’s environmental team rather than assuming a standard resource consent condition applies.
