Every energy asset class has its own noise profile, and the mitigation approach only works if it’s designed around the real source. Here’s what typically drives noise across the sector:

BESS and solar are where Hushtec has the deepest published data right now, since that’s the segment growing fastest and generating the most compliance activity. The same acoustic-planning logic applies as geothermal and grid-scale projects scale up.

Against that, NZS 6802:2008 sets recommended upper noise limits of 55 dB LAeq during the day and 45 dB LAeq at night, with lower limits down to 30–40 dB LAeq in quiet residential zones. That gap doesn’t close on its own, and it doesn’t close cheaply once equipment is already ordered and civil works are underway.

Noise conditions are set through your local district plan under the Resource Management Act, assessed against NZS 6802:2008. Night-time residential limits typically sit at 45 dB LAeq, with lower limits in quiet residential zones. A Hushtec site assessment confirms the number your council will require.
