BESS and solar are where Hushtec has the deepest published data right now, since that’s the segment growing fastest and generating the most compliance activity in Australia — particularly in rural NSW, VIC, and QLD where large-scale projects are increasingly sited near residential receivers.

Against that, NSW’s Noise Policy for Industry (2017), administered by the EPA under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, sets a Project Noise Trigger Level based on background noise plus an intrusiveness allowance (commonly background + 5 dB(A)), alongside an amenity limit that’s typically in the 35–40 dB(A) range for residential receivers at night, depending on the area’s noise amenity category. Other states apply an equivalent EPA-administered noise policy. That gap doesn’t close on its own, and it doesn’t close cheaply once equipment is already ordered and civil works are underway.
From the BESS & Solar Noise Control blog: on a recent BESS project sited near a rural residential area, Hushtec acoustic enclosures cut fan and HVAC noise by more than 18 dB(A), bringing site emissions well below the project’s 40 dB night-time limit. In NSW, projects are assessed under the EPA’s Noise Policy for Industry (2017), which sets both an intrusiveness trigger (typically background + 5 dB(A)) and an amenity limit based on the surrounding area’s noise category.
